Proposal to change water planning in Central Queensland

On this page

We think there’s a better way to manage water in Central Queensland (CQ) and we would like to hear what you think of our ideas.

Right now, we have separate water plans for the Fitzroy Basin, Boyne River Basin, and Calliope River Basin areas that are set to expire in the next few years and need be replaced. The coastal basins of Styx, Shoalwater and Waterpark do not fall under any water plans currently (water in these areas is managed under the Water Act 2000 and the Water Regulation 2016 e.g. Farnborough underground water area).

These water systems are connected, and we think it would work better if we managed them under one water plan. A CQ water plan would join the current water plan areas in the region into a single plan while also bringing the three adjacent coastal areas into Queensland’s water planning framework.

How to give your feedback

We want your feedback on our list of key issues. Let us know what other things you think we should consider.

First, read how water is managed now.

Second, read through the key topics and questions we’re asking about each one. They are:

Third, have your say by sending a written submission to us by 4 November 2024.

We will be meeting directly with those interested throughout the review process. We will be working with the CQRWA stakeholder advisory group and with other stakeholders who wish to be involved to provide opportunities to meet and talk about the water planning.
